Commercial roof materials guide for your Worcester area business

Flat roof materials and methods require a distinct set of knowledge and skills from typical residential shingle installations.  Dudley, MA-based LJ Construction has many years of experience in installing and repairing these commercial roofing materials and would like to share this primer on flat roof materials.

Asphalt – This is the oldest flat roofing material typically seen in Central Massachusetts commercial applications.  Although asphalt is heavier and can be less durable than some of the newer technologies, it is generally less expensive if budget is a concern for your business.

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) – Available commercially for over 50 years, PVC roofing comes in large sheets which are rolled out and seam-welded with a special heat gun.  With its natural light color, PVC is excellent at reflecting heat and can be a great way to decrease cooling costs for your Southbridge or Sutton business.

TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) – Like PVC, TPO is another membrane roofing material but uses newer technology. It can be fully adhered or mechanically fastened and offers more resistance to UV degradation than PVC for your Central Massachusetts business.

Given the very flat pitch on which these commercial roofing materials are typically installed, they all need careful periodic attention and maintenance to prevent roof leaks. (Many Worcester area commercial roofs have slopes as low as 1/8 inch of slope per horizontal foot of roof, as compared to 6 to 12 inches of drop per foot in a standard roof).
